Tax Fraud/Tax Evasion

Florida Tax Crime Defense Lawyer

The Internal Revenue Service has been the downfall of many criminal enterprises — and many innocent citizens. The federal government has broad powers to dig through your personal life if it believes you are shirking your tax obligations, and a conviction carries prison time fines, penalties and interest.

The law firm of Charles M. Harris, P.A. in Fort Myers, Florida, stands up for your rights and provides a vigorous defense if you are charged with, or under investigation for, tax fraud. I am Charles Harris, a criminal law attorney for more than 30 years, with extensive experience in federal court.

You Can't Talk Your Way Out of This

Speaking to the tax authorities without legal advice is a mistake. You will only dig a deeper hole for yourself. Contact me today if the IRS or Department of Justice is breathing down your neck. I represent people accused of tax fraud or tax evasion throughout Southwest Florida, from Sarasota and Punta Gorda to Naples and Lake Okeechobee.

Tax Fraud and Tax Evasion

To convict you of tax fraud, the government must prove that you knowingly provided false information on a tax return to reduce your tax burden, or that you willfully failed to file a return. I work to counter the allegations by showing that there was no intentional misrepresentation, or to provide a justifiable explanation for not filing the return or paying the tax owed.

The U.S. Tax Code is incredibly complex. I have represented professionals, business owners and other individuals who made mistakes in calculating individual income tax or corporate income tax, as well as businesses accused of failing to withhold and pay employment taxes. I have also defended clients accused of funneling unpaid taxes to other accounts, resulting in additional charges of money laundering, and prosecutors commonly charge mail fraud or wire fraud in conjunction with tax fraud.

Where possible, I will negotiate with the IRS, DOJ or the State of Florida to make good on the tax debt and have criminal charges dismissed. I will also fight for you at trial or at plea negotiations and sentencing to avoid a conviction or limit the penalties.
